Know Your Soap

HogWash Hills Soaps was built on a simple idea: you should know exactly what goes into your soap and where it comes from.
We raise our own pigs right here on the farm, render the lard by hand, and make each batch with care from start to finish. At the same time, we know tallow soaps are not for everyone. That's why we also offer plant-based and vegan options. Every bar, no matter the base, is made with the same level of care, quality, and attention to ingredients and craftsmanship. No matter what you're looking for, we want there to be something here for you.

"I raised the animal. I rendered the fat. I made the soap." ~ JOEY

HOGWASH HILLS

Life on the farm is part of the story.
Days here revolve around caring for animals, tending the land, and balancing rural life with the craft of traditional soapmaking.

Good soap takes time.

This isn't a factory process.

Frequently asked questions

Are your soaps all natural?

Yes. Our soaps are made in small batches using traditional ingredients such as coconut oil, castor oil, local honey, clays, botanicals, and essential oils. We avoid synthetic colorants, generic vegetable oils, and unnecessary additives. Our focus is on simple, high-quality ingredients that create a better bar of soap.

Why is Kunekune pork tallow so special?

Kunekune pork tallow is prized for its naturally high oleic acid content, which helps create a bar of soap that feels exceptionally creamy, gentle, and conditioning on the skin. Kunekune pigs are a traditional heritage breed known for producing high-quality fat with a smooth, stable fatty acid profile. This type of fat creates soap that develops a rich, creamy lather and a long-lasting bar, outperforming and making it superior to soaps made primarily with beef tallow and/or liquid vegetable oils.

Are your soaps good for sensitive skin?

Many customers with sensitive skin enjoy our soaps, especially bars like Hunter’s Helper, which contains colloidal oatmeal and local honey and is intentionally left unscented. However, everyone’s skin is different, so customers should always review the ingredient list if they have allergies or sensitivities.

How long do your soaps last?

Our soaps are properly cured and made with hard oils, which helps them last longer than many commercial bars. To extend the life of the soap, it should be allowed to dry between uses on a draining soap dish and should not sit in standing water. Handmade soap will last much longer when it is able to dry between uses instead of becoming waterlogged.

Do you use fragrance oils?

Most of our soaps are scented with high-quality essential oils chosen for their aroma and skin-friendly properties. We prioritize essential oils that are pure and free from unnecessary additives. Occasionally, a high-quality fragrance oil may be used for custom orders or specialty bars. When fragrance oils are used, we carefully select options that are free from common harmful additives such as phthalates, parabens, formaldehyde-releasing compounds, and harsh synthetic fillers. Any fragrance oil used will always be clearly listed in the ingredients for that product so customers know exactly what is in their soap.

Why do handmade soaps cost more than store-bought soap?

Handmade soap is produced in small batches using higher quality ingredients and traditional methods. Each bar requires time to make and must cure for several weeks before it is ready to use. At HogWash Hills Soaps, an important part of that process also includes raising and caring for the pigs that provide the tallow used in many of our soaps. The lard is then carefully rendered by hand before being used in our soap making. This level of involvement adds value and transparency, because we know exactly where our ingredients come from. Many soap makers purchase commercial tallow and may not know how the animals were raised or where the fat originated.

How do I use and care for my soap?

For best results, use your bar lightly ~ a little goes a long way. Work up a lather in your hands, on a cloth, or with a brush, then apply. To help your soap last longer, keep it dry between uses. A draining dish or soap saver works best.

Our sea salt bars are more concentrated than traditional soaps. Use lightly, as overuse can feel extra cleansing. These bars also continue to improve with cure time, developing a creamier, more balanced lather over the first 4-6 weeks.

Our solid dish soap is designed to be used with a brush or a sponge ~ just a quick swirl is all you need.

With proper care, your soap will last longer and perform exactly as intended.
